Carol Sloane

Jazz Singer

Vocal Workshop

Carol Sloane - Jazz Singer In the world of jazz singing, CAROL SLOANE has been one of the most respected and admired throughout her 60+ career filled with recordings, concert and night-club appearances, associations with jazz luminaries such as Oscar Peterson, Carmen McRae, Bill Charlap, Clark Terry, Frank Wess, Phil Woods, Grady Tate and numerous others, activities which attest to her knowledge and skill.

In her forthcoming Master Class/Workshop, CAROL SLOANE will explore jazz singing styles recognizable and obscure, discuss the nature of true jazz singing, and whether scat singing is really a way to prove you are a jazz singer. Students will be given the opportunity to memorize a tricky instrumental melody, then will be asked to write a lyric to it. It won't be mandatory, but it will be fun.

Charming, knowledgeable Tom LaMark will play piano, and singers will explore the subtle shadings and various ways of conveying a lyric which focuses on interpretive use of spatial phrasing.
